Castle Darry

Fire & Blood

Castle Darry was the point where Ser Damon Darry joined a royal expedition against Harrenhal, and the refuge to which a small fraction of that force returned after defeat. Its brief appearance in the account connects an attempted military recovery of Harrenhal with the alarming report that followed the survivors home.

A Staging Point for the Expedition

Ser Regis Groves, a Kingsguard knight acting on the orders of Tyland Lannister, set out from King’s Landing with fifty seasoned men to reclaim Harrenhal. At Castle Darry, Ser Damon Darry joined him with a like number, bringing the party to about a hundred. Regis judged this force sufficient to deal with the people occupying the castle, an estimate quickly disproved by the resistance awaiting them.

The Defeat at Harrenhal

At Harrenhal, the expedition found the gates shut and hundreds of armed people on the battlements. Alys Rivers came out to parley with a child at her side and claimed that the boy was Aemond Targaryen’s trueborn son and heir. The dispute over what followed was unresolved: accounts differed over whether Regis was killed by sorcery or by a projectile from the walls. In either telling, he died, the gates opened, and armed riders poured out. The king’s men were routed.

Survivors and a Warning

Ser Damon escaped the battle and the pursuit that continued through the night. Of the hundred men who had set out, only about thirty-two made it back to Castle Darry. The next day, another survivor arrived: a captive who had been forced to watch his companions die under torture before being released to carry Alys’s warning that those who came near her walls should expect to die unless they submitted.

The warning seemed to acquire force at Castle Darry itself. When one of Ser Damon’s men laughed, the messenger clutched his throat and died moments later. The account says that marks resembling a woman’s fingers were reportedly visible on his skin, but does not establish what caused his death. The episode left the returning party with a story that made Harrenhal seem dangerous beyond its armed defenders.

Significance

Castle Darry appears not as the scene of a battle but as the expedition’s practical link between the capital and Harrenhal: a place to join forces, and then the destination of the survivors. The loss of Regis and most of the party troubled Tyland Lannister. The regents dismissed Ser Damon’s reports of sorcery and a dragon as outlaw tales, but agreed that a stronger force would be needed to retake Harrenhal. The castle’s role in the episode thus ends with a warning carried back from a failed attempt, while the question of how to answer it remained unresolved.
